Multivitamin also in some cases known as multi minerals are prepared as supplements intended to complete the deficiency between a balanced diet and the normal unbalanced diet every individual takes. These multivitamins are prepared by adding vitamins, dietary minerals and other related nutritional elements and are available in form of tablets, capsules, powder, syrups and injectables.

A normal definition of a multivitamin is any supplement that is made using at least 3 vitamins or minerals and no herb, hormone or drug is used in its preparation also the quantity of vitamins and minerals should be below the tolerable level of a person.

Today many multivitamins available in the market contain 10 vitamins and minerals for your diet replenishment; the only one not available is calcium as its total dose is too heavy to be put in a tablet or capsule. The major reason for taking multivitamins is said to be that these supplements strengthen your immune system which in turn allows it to fight against many diseases such as colon cancer and many cardiovascular diseases. Although these facts are true regarding multivitamins but recent studies show that these vitamins and minerals are not all they are assumed to be.

Multivitamins are a good way to supplement for lost nourishment in case you are unable to find fresh fruits and vegetables but they are definitely no substitute for a balanced and healthy diet as taking a balanced diet may be more beneficial than it is considered and there is no fear of over taking any certain mineral or vitamin. Supplementing your diet through healthy eating is always a better option as compared to taking multivitamins.
The point when taking multivitamins is to find the right one for you as there is a wide variety of multivitamins present in the market. There are supplements for males, females, kids, pregnant women; older people over the age of 60 etc, also there are special supplements for people who are on diets.
Multivitamins can be valuable to replenish your balanced diet but it has its side effects too. Different medication may react differently when interacted with these multi vitamins and also there is no one defined quantity of balanced diet components as people with different medical conditions may have different dietary needs. For example either deficiency or excess of vitamin A in pregnant women can lead to serious birth defects in the baby.

Also there are certain deficiencies of vitamins and minerals that are of a serious nature and cannot be supplemented by over the shelf multivitamins brand and avoiding these deficiencies can also prove to be harmful for the individual.
